The Butler

The butler was the top of the food chain, in charge of the pantries like the buttery, in which (once upon a time) the butts of wine and other liquors were stored. He was more of a manager than someone involved in physical work. He might answer the door, formally announce guests, and serve the dinner, but generally a footman would take on those duties.
